The term dental implant refers to the cylindrical or tapered screw which, when placed in the jaw, firmly bonds with the surrounding bone, functioning in the same way to the roots of your own teeth.
Modern implants, which are made from commercially pure, hypoallergenic titanium, are extremely durable and unlikely to break or fracture.
Because dental implants don’t rely on other teeth for support, they do not require cutting, and therefore compromising the health of, adjacent natural teeth. And, when several teeth are missing, it may be impossible to place a fixed dental bridge, so two or more implants to support crowns can be used instead.
Dental implant supported crowns look, feel and function just like your own teeth. In fact, many patients treated with dental implants experience a significant improvement in their ability to chew food thus aiding digestion.
Further, because dental implants reduce the loss of jaw bone and gum shrinkage experienced when teeth are lost, they contribute to preserving your facial features. So, with a dental implant or implants, not only will your smile look better, you’ll have more reasons to smile too.
